Thought I'd see if anyone knows the answer before I go and investigate the bottom bracket...

I've got a Cannondale CAAD9 2010 Tiagra triple. I've never touuched the bottom bracket since purchased but it's started to become noisy so time to clean up/change etc.

It has the BB30 logo and from a little research it appears the later CAAD9 frames have the BB30 system and my tiagra specced bike appears to have a Tiagra bottom bracket with "adapter". Does anyone know what this "adapter" system means with this frame? I've googled it but the answers given elsewhere are unclear.

Any help would be appreciated before I tackle the job tomorrow (sun) and do something I shouldn't do.

Thanks

Partially-I understand that adapters are used to allow normal sized cranks to be fitted to oversized BB30 bottom brackets. What I'm unclear of is what adapter is used and how it is fitted/removed. Never seeing a BB30/Hollowtech 2 setup before I'm unsure of what to look for.

I've a BB30 Hollowtech set up; there are a few different adapters (some easier to remove/replace than others), what does it look like when you take the chainset off?

This is the removal tool; http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=36374

If you remove it you'll then need to use either BB30 bearings and replace your crank with a BB30 one, or Shimano now do press fit bearings for use with their standard 24mm axle chainsets, (new Scott Foil for example uses this set up)

FWIW I'd stick with the adapter. I'm in the process of fitting one in my CAAD10 so I can convert it to Hollowtech II.

Hope that helps.

Not sure-will report back once I've taken it off.

Thanks-are these adaptors easy to remove/refit/replace? My worry is that I will remove it then have to buy another because they are a once and for-all fit? (I'd read somewhere that they are generally glued in on new bikes?)

IIRC, the description of the bike on the Evans website (no longer on there and my pdf copy is at work) says that the bottom bracket was a "Tiagra w/c adapter". This doesn't make sense to me. Surely the description should be "BB30 with hollowtech adapter"? I'd initially gone and bought a Tiagra bottom bracket on this basis:whistle:

There's a warning on the FSA adapter that repeated fitting and removal can damage the adapter, but as they only around a tenner it wouldn't be the end of the world.

FWIW it also states once fitted it should never be removed from a cf frame, (doesn't apply to us CAAD guys).

I've never attempted to remove one, but as there's a tool available it must be do-able.

The Loctite that is supplied with the adapter is Loctite 609, http://tds.loctite.com/tds5/docs/609-EN.pdf. It is used for retaining applications according to that tech sheet, so while it doesn't sound permanent I can't imagine removal being the simplest procedure.

Let us know how you get on

So, have you had to clean/replace the bearings on the bb30? If so, is the procedure any different to standard bb30 maintanence?

Any particular reason you have quoted the £75 tool for removing the bearings rather than a £5 one like this?

I've stripped it and greased it a couple of times and tbh it's a doddle, but I can't eliminate creaks in mine even with new bearings, loads of lithium grease and a torque wrench that does 45Nm?

It was just the first result that came up on Google.

Well I've fettled and what do you know - it's not a bb30, it's a boggo standard Hollowtech II. I did read somewhere yesterday that some of the CAAD9's had been incorrectly stickered up with BB30's - seems mine was one of them.

The good news is that I had ordered a Hollowtech II bottom bracket anyway, so no additional tools of bearings needed - all I need is some more white spirit to clean everything up and bolt back up.

Many thanks for all the contributers to this thread - I now have a good understanding of bottom bracket designs and some factory monkey's inability to correctly sticker up a frame.
