Ok, so I'll probably be wanting a carbon bike soon enough but money is a problem as I'm a student, I would get a weekend job but that would take away alot of my cycling time.

So I'm wondering what are the advantages of buying parts vs buying full.

The reason I'd consider buying parts is so that I could save up for and buy parts as I go along through the next year.

Thanks.

Have a look on wiggle/chain reaction etc and add up the price of all the components vis a vis a similarly specced built bike and , hey presto, there is your answer. You may have to factor in the price of tools that you'd need to build it yourself too.

The knowlege you gain would be great however Im guessing that you would only save a tiny amount. Saving and buying a new frame however would be a good start for you andy, get another 2nd hand machine and start tinkering/swapping stuff about, should be fun!

Why carbon? It'll only get nicked. If I were you, I'd save a shitload of money and buy something that won't, but will give you a *lot* of fun. Something like this, eg.
