I wondered where yesterday had disappeared to until I realised how much IO'd done with mainly cycling related activities:

  • Stripped down a Trevor Jarvis Flying Gate bike
  • Cleaned up its chainset ready for Ebay
  • Cleaned up its wheels ready for ebay
  • Cleaned the frame ready to hand over to Trever Jarvis
  • Arranged a rendezvous with TJ in Reeth at the weekend
  • Juggled with the parts of a Minoura Space grip and installed them on my Dave Yates bike - what a pain that was
  • Fixed a map clip to the Yates' and moved the computer and front light to the space bar.
  • Lowered three paving slabs in the drive by 0.5cm to allow access to my stash of bike bits in a side cupboard. Dynorod had raised the drive when replacing a section of drain.
  • Removed clean and replaced the chain on the Galaxy
  • Re-arranged the contents of the garage to give me the space to have the option of not using a Turbo trainer when I set it up.
  • Purchased and replaced a sliding door mechanism for the bathroom door.
  • Prepared and cooked the evening meal
  • Researched and prepared a shopping list of parts to revert the Flying Gate to a geared condition
  • Prepared a list of requirements for the Flying Gate refurb
During my travails I discovered a lot of cheap nine speed stuff of the Shimano 105 chain set variety. It nearly as cheap to buy the chain set as it is to but a set of chain rings.

I can't decide which colour to have the frame re-stoved in. A matching retina searing orange to go with my Dave Yates audax bike is tempting as is Bianchi Blue (it's green really or is my colour vision broken?)

I'll be placing the fixed wheel bits on Ebay later today and meanwhile will be doing domestic stuff to tidy up the end of the year. I might even go out for my first cycle ride of December.

What was the Gate's original colour - I'd keep it period colour - classic like that....

It's not a particularly nice shade of yellow. If it was a proper Flying Gate then I'd probably go for total authenticity. I am however likely to use the Mafac brakes and levers. I managed to chase down some rubber hoods to replace the perished ones on the bike. I've also got a spare set of Mafac cantilevers to replace the caliper brakes that were fitted to the front but that's as far as it goes.
