My son in law is a civil engineer and lost his job before Christmas but as he'd paid more than was necessary into his mortgage for the last few years, he aproached the B/S asking if they would suspend repayments for 6 months while he looked for work. They refused but said that if he reapplied sayng that he wanted the suspension of repayments to allow him to buy a car or to improve his house then it would be ok. He dd and it was. Hmmmm...:wacko:

Not sure, I'm seeing him today, I'll ask. You sound like you know something I dont...;)

No not at all but they are an administrative nightmare. I was so relieved when under my power of attorney I closed all my aunts nationwide accounts only to find they then took over the Portman and I had to start again.

I think the main trouble with most banks and building societies is that there is no longer anyone at a local level who is given any discretion to make decisions, if you can't tick all the boxes it can't be done. I am actually more sypathtic and understanding of them than most people (due to being a Senior Manager with .... in a former life) but given my recent experiences in actually trying to open a school account to put £60k in (we already have accounts at same bank and branch) I am starting to lean towards the other side. I submitted an application form 2 weeks ago for my 12 yr old to open a new account (to close his Nationwide one) and I haven't heard anything yet.
