Balaclava is nice, but I'm minus 17 f overnight, high to morrow minus 9 f. I won't ride in this, but I need a 'clava below 30f. And goggles and mittens. I ride down to about 15f at times. My club New Years Ride was about 6 miles, most everyone in balaclavas.
Balaclava's are great for, as Kies has pointed out, really cold weather. I wore one last year while cycling about before the bike got put away for good.
buffs to zero or so, thin and light but super warm gortex windstopper balaclava for freezing rides. I found it for £3 in a bargain bin at a bike jumble, my best ever cold weather investment.
