Budget Bikes

Hi there,

I've got a budget of £200 or so, and need a bike for a 4 mile commute, all paved, with the ability to do some easy trails at the weekend. I'm 5' 10", 13 stone, and coming up to 50, although I'm still fit enough to run a bit..

I was looking at the Raleigh Nova in Halfords yesterday, at £160. With a helmet, lock etc, that's within my budget. Is it a good bike for what I want to do. It looked good, and has disc brakes, which I'd really like, and the front suspension should make for a comfortable all round ride.

I know I could get something second hand easily within that budget, but I'd like something new so that I know that there aren't going to be hidden surprises later on.

Cheers

@VapingCoffee nice to see somebody with a bit of common sense

disc brakes on the lower end bikes are not always great so try them first before buying purely on that fact same goes for fr suspension as it normally only adds weight .

i think i would go 2nd hand and either get local bike shop to give it a good check over before parting with hard earnt cash if need be

not sure where you are in the uk but this looks good value and would suit your needs if right size etc etc Carrera Subway

So long as you stay away from the Supermarket specials and stick to a known brand then you should be Ok

The Carreras Subway set a standard for commuting bikes despite the low price tab

The other question to ask is about your skills

If the frame itself is sound, then upgrading discs, and other bits can be done at your leisure
