Near the end of a ride last week my friend noticed the front brakes were rubbing and when we checked it was obvious the wheel had a buckle.
As we had both done the same 55 mile ride over the same road conditions and he had not noticed riding over anything in particular e.g. manhole/grid etc. some questions came to me......
1) Besides hitting a large object.........what can cause a buckle ?
2) My bike & wheels are "better quality" than his. Would that make his more liable to buckles ?
3) How can he/I repair his own wheel buckle (Halfords did it for £10 so it can't be that involved)

See here

Note he pre-stresses the wheel after trueing. Your bad wheel may not have been pre-stressed, so do this first.

If it's a poorly built wheel to start with, just truing it won't make it more robust. Cheap components could exacerbate the issue. If it's a road wheel, it shouldn't be subject to much stress. It's more difficult to get a front wheel seriously wrong than a rear.
