I notice that Decathlon have just introduced the above bike for £599.00. An Alfine 8 speed hub geared bike with disc brakes for this price is a good. I don't want to spend much more because it will become a target for thieves and I have Yorkshire blood. I intend to use for as my day to day bike, in a town with hills. Is it worth it?

Hi,

Most Decathlon bikes are very good value and unlikely to be "not worth it".

However you can buy a bike that does what you want much cheaper,
not least of all from Decathlon, but not Alfine and not disc brakes.

There is really not much wrong, and a lot right with this :

The money you will save means you could also buy a (very) good
(used) road or offroad bike to go with with the day to day bike.

Two bikes halves the wear and tear and maintenance, and
allows you take biking more seriously over a day to day bike.

I have a day to day cheap folder / shopper and a road bike.

After 2 months of buying the Network 700 and fitting extras it has I described in an earlier post I have found it does what is says on the tin. It goes, it stops, no charging batteries, no grease stain trousers. Yes the BTwin Hoprider 500 and alike would do the job but would need more maintenance. There have been downsides, the Shimano 8 speed hub gears needs it's cable adjusting fortnightly. But it's very easy; fingers not get dirty and it's done a minutes. The other is the cost, £600. A gad around town bike should be cheap, to help it not get nicked.
