Just had a letter from BT
"Two great ways to save" Detailing that 0845 numbers (which I never call) are now free.

In the small print they are hiking up my line rental from £11.50 to £12.50 and raising daytime call charges from 3.91p/min to 4.50p/min

In all that is the standing charge up about 10% and the main calls up 15% plus they are scrapping my "friends and family" discounted numbers.

"Start saving today" it says!

I have not bothered before shopping around and really know nothing about alternative suppliers of landlines. But times are hard now.
Can I change to a non BT service keeping my number? Can I save money?

Well I'm sorry it went up by a quid on the line rental. However I regard making 0845 numbers free if that is true a really, really big deal for millions of people. Of course plenty of numbers run 0844, 0870 and 0871 numbers but it's a small victory.

Daytime call rates to 4.5ppm is out of order though. It's very retrograde going back quite a number of years.

Yes you can keep you number. Yes you can save money. It's a matter of looking through charts of tariffs though.
