Toothbrushes are good, as are pipecleaners - the thicker longer sort you get in craft shops and some stationers. They get in between the sprockets nicely and can be pulled back and forth to get the gunge out.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
For removing dust, dried mud, etc. from non-greasy areas, before spongeing and wiping clean - a nice fat, soft, good quality, 4" paint brush, (kept specifically for the job, washed clean after each use). For less accessible areas - brakes etc. - a soft 1" brush. For chain rings, chain, cassette - drive train in general - rags, toothbrushes (including an old electric one), and Decathlon's bike cleaning ones. If you use Prolink lube and wipe the chain clean after each ride you won't get that build up of crap on the cassette and chainrings and life will be a lot easier

Old washing-up brushes- great for removing mud and stuff

Used toothbrushes- great for cleaning fiddly bits

Sponges- good for nearly everything, except pointy stuff, which shreds them.

Rags. Great for chain cleaning and for polishing etc.

The cheapest supermarket toothbrushes - bought new for the job a couple of times a year - for the thick crud.

A paintbrush - old if available and paint free - soaked in water, for the rest. I find 1" to 1 1/2" the best but others will do.

Just the long-bristled brush that comes with a dustpan. The long handle helps you to get inside the spokes then the long bristles get into all the nooks and crannies.
