Bruised Ribs

For those of you who don't know, I came off my bike at about 25mph the Sunday before last (31/7/11), that with tarmac doesn't make a good combo xx( on the bright side it could have been worse. Anyhow I managed to bruise my left rib, A&E confirmed but as they didn't do an xray it can't be too serious. I'm just wondering how long given other folks experiences it might last?

Ouch.. feel for you...
I suffered a 3mm cracked rib year before last going over the bonnet of a car. Doc's said 8-12 weeks, but it was about 6 weeks. First couple of weeks very bad. Stock up on Co-codomal for nights as turning round in bed is painful.

Glad you're OK Buddy and wishing you a swift recovery. I know what that feels like having crashed 3 times at around 25 mph.

I have also had rib injuries, mainly through football I might add, and it can take some months for a damaged rib to heal. As long as you don't play contact sports you should be ok although it will be sore for a while no doubt!

There is no point in taking an x-ray of your ribs as they cant do much anyway, they will have listened to your chest to se if you had punctured a lung or something I'm guessing.

When I was knocked off last year, I was told in A&E, if it hurts for 2-3 weeks its bruised, if it hurts for 6-8 weeks it is broken/fractured etc.

I was a week late going to A&E with mine (only went after the pain I experienced in a 5km running race), they pretty much called me a nutter for not taking pain killers and gave me some then sent me home, lol

Did mine last year having a water fight with the kids - I was on hols in Turkey.

They were very sore for the first week, and I could ride after a week, but only carefully, and no honking up hills - too painful. 6 weeks and they'll be much less painful, and then improvement over time ! First couple of nights were a mare - had to sleep sat up, had trouble breathing when lying on any side.

I slipped on wet floor a few years ago, and landed on my side on the corner of a unit. My ribs weren't x-rayed, but I know I was at least badly bruised and possibly had a couple of cracked ribs - also blood in my urine, so one of my kidneys had taken a knock.

I could only manage to sleep in one position for about a week, and any movement at all was painful. I was back at work (manual job, and it was a family business, or I probably would have taken more time off!) after 2 weeks, and probably back to normal after about 6-8 weeks. Sneezing was very painful!

You haven't looked 'held back' on the rides I've seen you on!

Glad to hear you are feeling it less - you're sounding very motivated - crack on!

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I hope you heal well !

When i sheared my tendons joining the ribs it got gradually worse till it hurt to breathe and move and i was off work for a week then on restricted duties for a few weeks after wards on co-codamol so i could not drive any heavy machinery so they would not let me loose on a fork truck.

Once the pain had subsided enough so i could breathe comfortably i was able to cycle as i found i was comfortable on the bike once i was on it, no hacking up hills or getting on the drops for a while though .
