Brompton gear cable tension unslacked

My 2017 S2L had too much tension in its gear cable so I tried to release it a bit from the turning cap at the shifter end of the cable. Except now I released it too much.

I can screw the nut back into the shifter but it no longer 'holds' the end of the cable to give it tension. The cable end is exposed and I can't push it back into the nut/cover at the shifter end.

See explanatory pic.

There's got to be a fix for this, right? I'm at my wits end having run into this issue while trying to solve another one.

The adjustment is at the derailleur end, not the shifter end. The shifter end just has a 'bullet' on the end of the cable. If the cable outer has come loose, as in your pic, you should be able to pull the outer back into its socket by tightening the cable at the rear derailleur - no need to go unscrewing the shifter cover at all. Shortening (i.e. tightening) the cable effectively pushes the outer back into place.

See if this video helps:

But I only got into this issue by unscrewing the barrel adjustor at the shifter end. I did nothing at the derailleur end to make the cable and it's housing become slack.

Also if the adjustment is at the derailleur end keeping the cable taut, how comes when I unscrew the shifter from the handlebar and open the shifter housing it's still taut and functional? Surely it should slacken, no? You can see what I mean by the shifting off the handlebars here as the bloke in the video isn't exactly holding it taut:

I'm sure you're right, I'm just trying to get it through my head how it makes sensr with the above in mind.

Thanks for video. I'll go through it and see whether I can make any headway.
