I have had a Brompton since December and in that time done 12-1300 kms. I checked the chain today for wear with the wear tool and its already worn down to the 1mm "stretch" distance. This IMO is a very short amount of riding for the wear, especially on urban roads that are not very sandy or muddy. Is this usual?

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Wear tools are designed conservatively for use with derailleur bikes where the chain is less robust and gets all sorts of (designed-in) abuse. I wouldn't bother checking with a Brompton - or indeed any hub-geared bike.

In my 17 years and tens of thousands of miles of Brompton riding I think I've changed the chain twice - one when the sprocket was worn and once when the bike was worn and I got a new one. I haven't the foggiest idea whether the chain was "too stretched" according to some arbitrary definition.
