Hi, I broke a spoke on the rear wheel on commute into work this morning. It's 10 miles, can I get home this evening without inflicting any more damage? The bike is a Giant roady and the journey is all A-road. I've had to slacken off the brakes a little. I don't have any other option than to cycle home but I'm worried the wheel will collapse. Please advise. cheers folks

If you can, loosen the 2 spokes that are next to the broken spoke but puliing from different ends of the hub. This will equalise the tension and might help. If you don't know what I'm talking about, ignore my advice.
I've ridden 10 miles with a broken spoke before, no long term damage, but it depends on your wheel configuration (how many spokes etc).

Dave.

Blimey, what a fuss! In my youf I routinely rode bikes indefinitely with spokes broken - never thought twice about it. Not that I'm recommending it, but like Spandex says, I don't think a single broken spoke is *anything* to worry about. Just fix it this weekend.

Yep, one's not an issue. I had plenty of time riding with broken spokes in the first few weeks after getting my Giant SCR2 !

On the plus side, I:

(a) learned how to replace spokes, and;
(:biggrin: bought a set of Mavic Aksiums and put them on instead !

Yep - you'll be fine riding home - I broke another spoke on my 'questionable' MTB commuter wheels again this morning - will ride slightly easier going home, before I replace it..... non drive side this time...easy 5 min job.

Yes, you'll be fine.
I've ridden 50 miles home with one broken spoke of 32 and the brake adjuster slackened-off a bit.
And 12 miles with one broken spoke of 20, which didn't even need the brakes touching - I just used a rubber band to fix the loose end of the spoke to the one next to it to stop it rattling !
