My usual lunch time ride was cut short by a broken right hand gear shifter cable break.

And I can't get the partial cable and barrel out. Darn it.

Have replacement cable though and have fixed this before a couple of times. Very very faffy!

Going to be commuting home in a nasty gear

Could you choose a nicer gear by adjusting the bottom adjuster screw?

Changing cables is always a faff on, even when it was downtube shifters

Yeh, was wondering that too - I might do that. Thanks

Update: Yes - adjusted gears to middle, so I can get home! Easy peasy.

This forum and post has saved the day....

I ran into a similar problem the other day when my gear cable snapped inside the tiagra shifter. I managed to get the job done without drilling holes. Here's how

  • As you noticed you cannot downshift all the way. This is because the frayed ends of the cable are getting jammed inside the tightly spaced shifter. If you straighten those frayed cable ends as much as possible you might be able to downshift a notch or two more as the cable can now move a little more freely inside the shifter. With that in principle in mind I grabbed as much of that frayed cable end as possible and snipped them off. This allowed me to completely downshift all the way. And of course, once downshifted completely the head of that gear cable is free to just fall out.

I just did exactly the same, cut all the loose wire I could get, and it clicked all the way round, releasing the barrel!
