Hi,

I think i've broken my front gear shifter.

Its a shimano 105 shifter on my Trek 1.7 road bike.

It stopped working on my ride today and was stuck on the large ring. I couldn't shift it onto the small one. The small lever no longer clicks when it try to shift.

When i got home i squirted some gt85 into the shifter and moved the lever back and forth, but its still not clicking.

I removed the cable clamp from the derailleur cage to relax the cable tension, but
the shifter is still not working, and it doesnt move the cable.

Is there anything i can do ?

If not, i guess i need to get a new shifter. From a quick google search there are different variants of 105, i.e. 5600, 5700, etc. How do i know which variant i have?

Thanks
Dave

Remove the cable from the shifter, it may be jammed at that end

Tincaman, i tried but the end of the cable is not in the right position to come out. I looked at the rear shifter for comparison, and with the cable relaxed the cable end is clearly visible to come straight out. But on the right shifter the cable end is still half way round the ratchet thingy.
Its as if the cable is under tension but its not.

Smokeysmoo, yes found it thanks. Its 5600.

5600 left hand shifters are notorious for breaking - the right is usually ok.

I'd take the lever off and take the cable off - then try clicking up and down with nothing attached to the lever - if there are no clicks then the shifter is toast I'm afraid.

As what accountantpete has said, they are known for breaking. Happened to one of mine.
Unfortunately, they are not easily serviceable. Take one apart, of which I did and you will have a hard time putting it back together. If you can find what was wrong that is.

Thanks for the replies. How easy is it to remove? Do i have to remove the bar tape?

But from what you both say I think it is probably stuffed. I guess its a job for the bike shop.
