Managed to snap my chain today in 2 places, fortunately was only a mile away from Delamere Forest so managed to get a temp repair done at the cycle hire place there, is it normal for a chain to wear out at approx 1000 miles? thought it would last double that. Did a 60 mile ride on Saturday so good job it didnt happen halfway round on that as most of my riding was out in the sticks.

1. Always carry a chain splitter and a 'magic' link then a repair should be possible and relatively simple to do.

2. In my experience, after 1000 miles of commuting in all weathers my chains are getting close to the limit. It could be a lot less than that in winter for a 10-speed chain.

The chain on my road bike has done 1,500 miles since May and looks like it has just come out of the packet. (I wipe it down and lube it once a week.) My MTB doesn't get such loving attention and the chain looks rather more tired after about 1,200 but still not too bad. I've never had a chain break though I've let some of them get pretty bad.

Was it an Ultegra chain? Had the same thing with mine a couple of weeks ago.

No idea what chain it is, think its a Shimano, came with my bike when I bought it last September, it has a Tiagra 9 speed rear cassette, bit of a novice when it comes to cycle maint, think this was a bit of a wake up call to maybe get some lessons!!! Bikes a 2010 Merida Cyclocross 3 by the way.

I snapped one on holiday - it'd done only a few hundred miles. Bad gear change (mostly my fault) combined with hill and power = snap, bent buckled and a 2+ mile walk home. Oops.

Do I neeed to replace the cassette also? if so can I change from a 9 speed to a 10 speed and is it worth it?

the chap at Delamere Forest bike centre said it was nearly at 1% whatever that means! the links had physically cracked and split in half!!!

I had a similar set-up, 9 speed Tiagra with a Shimano chain. I didn't really log all my miles, but it was certainly in excess of 2000. Bike was an Allez Elite. I measured the chain with a ruler and it was below the 1%. I replaced it with a KMC chain and the rear cassette was absolutely fine.
