I probably covered my membership cost but spending some money at Halfords, didn't need the other benefits

It's definitely worth it. The discounts at Halfords and Wiggle means it pays for itself but there's lots of other benefits. One of the most important is third party insurance which I think is up to 10 million pounds. If you cause an accident or hit a pedestrian than without insurance you could be sued for a small fortune.

It has been sensible for a long time to have insurance. Not least because the NHS can recover costs for road accidents. Some 30 years I was working in A&E when one of my colleagues was admitted. On his bike he cut in between 2 cars stopped at traffic lights, not realising that the one in front was towing the other one. He hit the towrope and came off. The Health Service then sent him a bill for his ambulance and shoulder x-ray.

I generally assumed my household policy would cover it, but now I've started cycling seriously I've taken out British Cycling insurance.
