Omg. My last few posts shamed me into taking a closer look at my Raleigh Veloce's rear end, and the question is:

Is this Britain's dirtiest rear end?!

I am currently "Mickle-ing" as hard as I can to literally clean up my act! If you can believe it this is after a good 20mins with most of a can of GT85, a brush, screwdriver, cloth and cotton buds!

Will post the "after" photo as well when I can face the world with less shame.....

Thats nothing.

When I discovered "The Joy of Cleaning Bikes" earlier this year I set to work on the whole fleet of family bikes. My OH's was the worst. The two cogs (?) on the rear mechanism had completely lost their shape, they were just two blobs of mud.

Funnily enough he said it changed gear better after I'd finished it!

Now I love cleaning the chain and mechenism. I poke baby wipes through the hole in the chaim links to get them dirt free. Love it!

I know, it's shameful.
Have started tackling it, and genuinely thought most of those components were black by design....
My son just came to see what I was doing and his comment was "are those bits meant to be silver then!?"
Have got most of the surface crud off, but think I'm looking at disassembly, to get it all clean.
Like the baby wipes idea!

Errrrrr, sorry to disappoint, but that's almost showroom condition compared to the bike I used as a commuter. I didn't do anything except put some oil on the chain every week or two for several years, as I was busy with work at the time.

It was a bit like that, couldn't see the shape of the cogs at all! Disgusting!

My eyes..

My lads 'school bike' arrived totally caked in greasy mud. The thing is, it just wiped off and the rear mech was actually in great condition underneath.
