Do any of the locals know which parts of it are open to cyclists?
Reading the website doesn't really tell me much, other than certain sections are not cyclist permissable.

Also I assume the place to get onto it is near Sale library?
Is it beginner cyclist friendly? Or are they going to get spooked by proximity to water?

Thanks.

Hi Mate-it's open from Altrincham (just after Hellfrauds) up to the town centre.

IMO you wouldn't want to be cycling before you get to Timperley

The bit between Timperley to Stretford has been revamped and is excellent for cycling. I haven't tried to get all the way into town but I understand it's not great from around Trafford Park Rail.

Yes you can get on at Sale Library. Once you get to Hawthorn Rd in Stretford you can then get onto the Trans Pennine Trail too.

It's great for beginners. I often cycle down there with my daughter in a child seat and my wife (on her own bike obviously) and sometimes (if on my beater bike) use it to cycle to work, joining at Timperley, and leaving at Hawthorn Rd.

+1 about the rough parts, i've been from the junction with the leeds liverpool (leigh iirc) upto the barton viaduct, really really rough area and rough towpath, a few burnt out cars when i went down near the council estate.

it got much better after a tudor pub where people are living in moored barges.

i am thinking of the right canal aren't i?

yep just checked.

400bhp- Any idea about the other direction towards Warrington?
Was on the trans pennine last week near Lymm and went for a little detour up some steps (walking) and was right on the canal, looked decent.
I assume this bit is open for cycling?

I regularly cycle from sale to leigh along the canal with no problems, have to join the road for about 10 minutes after the trafford centre but other than that its fine.

I am planning to commute from Navigation Road area of Altrincham to Salford Quays. Does anyone know how close they are to completing the Brooklands - Timperley stretch of the upgrade and when will it be complete up to the A56? From what I can gather the best off road route is straight up to Watersmeet near Trafford Park and coming off at Fraser Place, then negotiate a couple of roundabouts each end of Europa Way and then over the foot bridge to Media City. If anyone knows a better way please let me know. I prefer to be away from the traffic so want to avoid the A56. Again for a beginner in reasonable health what sort of time would you expect? Thanks in advance
