What's your personal rule?

If you tell yourself you've ridden 25 miles (or whatever), how long were the breaks? How long does a break have to be before it's 2 x 12.5 miles, say?

Just wondering

My Guidelines:

If you come home (just to drop something off for a few seconds, for example) and go back out again - This is a single ride

If you are out and have a long stop, after a lengthy ride - return via train or cycle home and it is the following day... Providing you have not slept (in a bed or sleeping bag etc) - This is also single ride, IMHO ;)

To summarise... I take the mick a little bit here and tend to consider it/them to be single rides unless I am pretty much banged to rights. Eg. Go out in the morning and do 20 miles, get home, have a shower and get changed, maybe a little brekkie and do other stuff, then go out much later that afternoon. This is obviously 2 rides!

If you put the bike back in the garage and have a shower in between it's two rides. If not, it's just the one.

Cafe stops / lunch stops etc. break up the same ride IMO.

I generally don't stop on my rides, carrying plenty of bottles and quick snacks to drink/eat in the saddle.

That said if it's the same day and you haven't gone home, then surely it's the same ride.

There are different types of ride anyway, I say I don't stop - this is when I'm off by myself adding to the annual miles.
If I go with my wife for a nice bike ride round the New Forest then we stop off take some scenic pictures, stop at a pub for a drink etc..... But I still class this as the same ride.

Either way it's all good fun!

I usually cycle to a specific destination rather than doing a circular route. It's a great way to explore and I find it helps me built up a map of road networks in my mind (I am rubbish with directions...).

The journey has two legs and I spend about 10-15 mins on a break in between the two unless I've cycled to a specific place of interest.

People have this debate about 600km audaxes. If you ride 300km, have a little sleep somewhere, then ride another 300 back the next day, is that one ride or two....?
