Did you break your brake pads before replacing them?

Puzzle game procrastinator!
my commuter pads glazed over whilst left over x mas, i had to sand them down to stop the noise .
I borrowed a bike from my cousin in Scotland last autumn and soon discovered that the brakes squealed horribly and barely worked. I managed to burn most of the gunk from the front pads by repeated heavy braking on a long, fast descent. Less success with the rear brake though.

I remember when I lived in Edinburgh 17 years ago I got chased down by what I thought was a nutter (driving on the wrong side of the road etc). It turned out to be a bloke I had met for the first time at the club run at the weekend. He turned up for the next few rides. The last time I saw him was when he said he had solved his squeaky brakes (rim) with oil!

No, the bloke I got them off (a chap who pedals (!) his wares from a bus stop just outside Oldham) said because they're organic, a series of brakes, gentle to gradually more severe on the initial ride, would break them in.
Actually, my local shop is called The Endurance Hub, and the guy in there is savvy.

Out of interest, the ODO on the bike's computer reads 1260, which is how long the old pads lasted.

Is the miles or kilometers?
