If I had to choose between spare tube/s and repair kit, I'd take the repair kit. But I usually carry both.

Oh, who's got the spare cake and jelly babies?

I do a lot of long rides, from experience, its better to carry a pump, not a mini pump along with CO2, but one of the frame pumps if you can fit one to your bike. Also a roll of insulation tape comes in handy for unexpected jobs, for example I overheated my front wheel wheel leading to a blowout, repairing it was a major issue, my plastic Mavic rim tape had become very distorted and expanded with the heat and would no longer fit the rim it was that loose, A few turns over the rim tape with insulation tape solved the problem and held up for another 200+ till I got home. But a lesson learnt, avoid plastic rim tape.

Depends what you call long distance. For anything over 200 miles I'd probably carry 3 or 4 tubes plus a tyre boot of some kind.

I second the insulation tape - it can be used to patch up all sorts of things in an emergency.
Other than that
- a multi-tool that fits all the bolts / screws on your bike
- a chain tool (if it's not included on the multi-tool)
- 1 inner tube + repair kit just in case
- tyre levers (I haven't mastered the art of toolless tyre replacement yet)
- pump

a few zip-ties can be useful, but do little that the black tape can't.

On tours I also take spare brake+gear cables but wouldn't bother on day rides.

On longer rides along with normal kit I carry two rear cables, one brake one derailleur. I say rear because the length allows use on front mech or brakes and avoids carrying two of each. it can be snipped to length when I get home. I also carry a triangular bandage for emergencies. Pretty much anything first aid wise I can deal with on myself on the road can be sorted by a triangular bandage until I can get sorted properly.

I also never go out without my bus pass, just in case!

Only thing I'd add to that is a tyre boot (a section cut out of an old tyre is ideal).

I've been on 2 rides where one was needed to repair large holes in tyres.
