On my Raleigh road bike the brakes are very poor. It is fitted with conventional side pull assembles that are correctly set up and adjusted. I have just fitted new alloy wheels and at the same I fitted new brake blocks as supplied by my lbs. Braking is on a par with steel wheels in the wet, and I have to use a lot of pressure on the levers to stop the bike. I have been riding them for a few weeks now so should have bedded in by now. I don't think the problem is the cables as everything moves as it should, and with the cables disconnected the inners move smoothly in the outers. I guess new cables are the next logical step regardless of how the present ones appear, and I could try different blocks. The bike is fitted with "aero levers"(??) where the cables run along the handlebar and are covered by the bar tape. All my previous bikes have had old school cables coming out of the top of the hood. Are these covered cables any different in efficiency to the old style? Any further advice gratefully welcomed.
