I asked a keen cyclist colleague at work to check my brakes as I didnt have a rear one on the commute in this morning. Adjusted and sorted the problem, but he suggested that I need new pads. All new to me so just asking for recommendations for pads for my commuter hybrid. What do I need to look out for when searching for pads? Does one pad fit all? The breaks are Canti V's Rim brakes.
Cheers in advance.
Anil.

I guess, you'll be after v brake compatible, it as simple as that really. You also gets v brake inserts and holders. What you pay seems relative to what you get (quieter, better performance, especially in the wet). Koolstops are a good pair.

Thanks both.

I have just seen these on wiggle http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kool-stop-v-brake-dual-compound-pair-of-inserts/ based on HLaB's recommendations. Is it just as simple as removing the old pads and replacing them with new? There are so many options, I am at a loose end!
If your original brakes are of the cartridge type, then yes it is a simple process. If they are the all in on type (like these) then inserts wont fit unless you buy holders (something like these) which are more expensive initially.

Its sounds like
So can I replace the whole block as per you link, they seem to be what I have with various sizes nuts and washes holding them in place?
It does sound that way indeed, you have to be a little bit more pernickety in getting things set up right (pad/ rim alignment, toeing in etc) but there's not much to it other than loosening the old nut with an allen key, removing the old and inserting the new. You may need to screw in the barrel adjusters if they've been screwed out, to get the pads to fit. Set things finger tight initially, pull the brakes to get things to align properly (a thin piece of card behind the latter third of the brake can be added, to gain toeing in), and whilst still holding the brakes tightening. You tube will probably have loads of videos clearer than me.
