when do you change them? Mine are down to a bout 1 mm groove left , so do I wait until they are smooth as they are expensive to buy ( £4.99 a set) and use them till well worn?

When they're down to about 1mm. Which might mean years on the road, or a day in heavy, gritty clag (yes, I've worn a set out in a day of heavy off-roading in poor conditions, which isn't unusual apparently).

I wish the pads for any of my disc-braked bikes were only £4.99!

Ditto I have had my front pads for about 7 months now and virtually did all of the wear inside a days riding on muddy rainy roads with lots of downhill. P.S Shimano pads are utterly pants.

Tyres and brakes are not to be skimped on. You might get away with it for months, but when you are pulling the levers and still rapidly approaching a stationary object that £5 would seem VERY cheap!

My pads have started depositing tons of crud of the rims, I guess it's time to replace them!

Any recommendations?

swisstop salmon are derigeur this season. or koolstop. I have magura brakes on mine and magura state only their blocks to be fitted to keep within the 5 year warranty rules. £14 for a set of 4 from the worlds favourite haribo sender , which is better than £12 for a pair of clarks branded magura style from on yer bike in tooley street. I actually used the shops name in my response to the sales guy when he told me the price.

Thank you, I ended up getting some incontinence pads, I'd have to save my pennies to get swissstop or koolstop

4 pairs for £7.48 for the red ones. Not sure if there's any difference between the different colours other than the colour, but these are good pads. They may not be as good as Koolstops, but they work fine for me in all weathers. I also have some of the pads for carbon rims which are a real bargain as well.
