Hey Guys!

I'm looking to replace my brake pads on my road bike fairly soon, the brakes are side pull if that matters. Looking for something that will stop me quickly in the rain as well as the dry and hopefully get me through Winter too.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Coolstop Salmons seem to be popular, and apparently work well in the wet, although I've never tried them.

I'm currently using Clarks pads on one of my bikes which work very well in the dry, although they're not too great in the wet.

I have heard that the Salmon ones are good but because the rubber is soft, they wear quickly. Looking for something decently long lasting.

Generally speaking the harder compounds which last longer are not so great in bad weather, whilst the softer compounds are good in bad weather, however they don't last as long.

Unfortunately if you want good wet weather performance you may need to sacrifice longevity, as it's all a trade-off.

I suppose that makes sense. Would you say that the Coolstop pads are the ones to go for?

Kool Stop make a dual compound pad:

I am on about 3000 miles on my current koolstop salmons and there is still life left so they last a decent length of time- just remember to clean the rims and the pads every so often and dont drag the brakes when descending and even soft pads will last a while.

The Kool-stop dual compounds are very very good. I've used the post version on the canti brakes for a while and they last pretty well, as well providing awesome stopping power.
On dual pivot calipers I imagine they would be almost too powerful...you'd be locking the wheel and wearing out tyres faster than brake blocks.

I just about got 1500 miles out my KoolStops. They'll last longer than your stock brakes I think.

Trying out SwissStops as they seem to be next most popular.

The softer compound does wear faster BUT I guess that suggests it wears your rim more slowly
