Brake pads - damaging rim

Hi,

The brake on my new bike seem to be very scrapy vary often, even a short time after cleaning. They also seem to lengthen fairly quickly.

I' wondering if my pads could be disintegrating into the rim, and am concerned as it seems to be beginning to score my rims slightly.

While it could be dirt, I've not had any problems on other bikes, though I've not done as many miles. Any advice please.

I'm guessing pads aren't expensive. Should I just replace them and see?

Cheers
Steve

If in doubt replace the blocks.

What kind of brakes are they? It's not unusual to find cheapo blocks on new bikes.

I had this on my bike - I ended up changing the pads for Kool-Stop salmon (quite a soft compound compared to the blocks that came with the bike) and that resolved it.

I had the same thing on my new Trek. New bike pads are hard and glaze up quickly partic on new rims. I replaced them and it solved it. Clean the rims too

Thanks Guys,

Amusingly the only thing my pads say on them is 'DIN', which is actually accurate!

I'll change them today.

Cheers

You've possibly got shards of alloy embedded in your pads, it happens quite often which is why you should inspect them when you do your regular maintenance. You can remove these shards with a sharp knife, I usually give a light sanding of the pad surface when I finish.

Hi all, new member here.
I've just changed the pads on my newish Trek and found they had a touch of the shards.B) Is there any reason why this happens? bit worrying really.

If you insist on riding through Yam Yam land, I wouldn't be surprised if the metal dust in the blocks' faces have come off the roads with puddle water.:biggrin::biggrin:

I ride to Fred Williams quite often ( from Solihull ) and when it rains, I can see the roads shimmer with tiny bits of metal swarf and powdered glass.:biggrin:

Now bearing this in mind, I also take regular rides round the Jewellery Quarter with glue on my tyres.

don't worry. for whatever reasons new rims give off lots of crap. replace the pads and all will be well. keep the rims clean

You don't need to replace pads because they have shards of alloy in them, just dig them out with a sharp knife.

I hadn't thought of picking up tiny particles from the road - particually the state of the roads in dudleigh. Interesting! Thanks
