Brake Pad Replacements too large?

or just me being cack-handed?

Having purchased replacement pads for dual pivot callipers on my road bike and keen to learn a bit of basic bike DIY, attempted to replace old pads over the weekend. Opened brakes as wide as possible by adjusting cable and opening brake quick release mechanism and inserted new pads. Could not then close quick release without new pads touching the rim so wheel would not spin freely!

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

obvs if you touched the pad holders you got the washers back on in the correct order yes?
obvs at no time has anyone, e.g. LBS, taken a coarse amount of slack out of your cables at some point to compensate for wear yes?
obvs you've bought the correct replacement pads yes?

Yes.
Correct.
Err, reasonably sure, yes!! (surely I cannot be that stupid? - don't answer that, Greg!)

darned if I know then!

Let some cable through the clamp. That will sort it. Of course you'll likely end up with mushy brakes as a result. If so can I recommend a third hand tool?

DP pads bolt directly on with only one thin flat washer at most as they aren't V brakes so it's most likely not to do with the washers.

You could have the wrong pads, some cheap ones are thick square and blocky and meant to run with old single pivots, you will have to un-clamp the cable and see if the calliper springs open enough to take the pads, if it has room to accept the pads and make the pads contact fairly square to the rim with the QR lever done up, then it's a case of fitting the pads and re clamping in the right place while you have the calliper held almost shut on the rim, it is possible that the cable has been clamped up shorter than it should need to be to make very worn pads contact the rim.

Failing that you are running a rim that wont fit in the DP.

I used to have one of those, lent it to someone and never got it back. But nowadays I find one of these more useful given the fleet has V's DP's and cable discs.

and no, I did not pay that price. I got change out of £20 for mine.
