At work we use alcohol wipes for cleaning stuff ,They work extremely well on rim brake tracks ,I have been told ,I have never tried this if my employer is reading this
washing up liquid and water in a plastic pot - scrubbed on with an old tooth brush - wiped off with paper. If a lot of muck or I'm feeling really thorough I sometimes also use alcohol hand wipe things as well. Also clean pads and when clean check for debris. Maybe I'm sad but I find the process rather therapeutic - in fact if I can shift my arse I'm supposed to be doing some today - rain next week.
On rims use Isopropyl alcohol. Wipe off excess with clean rag. for brake blocks use a tiny screw-driver or similar to prise out any tiny pieces of grit, metal etc. Wipe off any excess dirt, grime etc with a clean rag.
