Afternoon all
I have a slight problem with my rear brake. When I pull the lever, the pad pulls the wheel over approx quarter of an inch before the brakes bite both sides of the rim.
Now, it was doing this a while ago and I found that by screwing in the tiny grub screw on top of one of the caliper arms, I could "balance" the pull of the calipers and they'd squeeze the wheel at exactly the same time without moving it.
Unfortunately, this situation didn't last long and I'd have to redo it every time I got to work which I assumed was caused by the grub screw just unscrewing itself.
So, whilst cleaning the drivetrain yesterday I had a bit of a brainwave, I thought I'll set the caliper up but with the addition of thread locking compound on the grubscrew, that way it can't slip again
However, I couldn't get it to work. Even by winding the grubscrew in so far that I thought it would come out of the bottom, it just ended up locking the brakes on. Slackening the cable would just cause the wheel to be pulled to one side again.
On reflection, I think that adjusting that grubscrew was just masking the problem as the one on the front caliper is pretty much flush with the top of the arm, always has been, and that brake pulls perfectly.
So, what other adjustment can I make? everything is well lubed (except the pads/rim obviously ) and all the bolts and things are tight. What am I missing?
Sorry for all the waffle by the way, I'm not very good at explaining things.........
Bike is a Giant SCR3 '07, the brakes have 521 Long reach written on them.
