Before buying new brake calipers I want to know what size I need. I assume this has to do with allowing enough clearance from the pivot to the rim, and is pertinent especially when the bike uses mudguards. So, what am I actually measuring - from where to where is the drop?

Thanks for your help on this.

Brake drop is measured from the centre of the caliper mounting bolt to the lowest part of the block mounting hole. (or mid rim if no old brakes to measure).

typically a none mudguard equipped bike will have 49mm calipers, and a bike with guards 57mm.
