Brake cable, have i been sent MTB version?

Hi all, just bought a set of "road" brake cables which are to be fitted to my Tiagra STIs

Tried to fit them last night, but it ferrules look wrong:

have i been sent mtb cables rather than road?

Yes.

Road cables look like this;

(see the top two images where the cable emerges from the outer).

It's a common mistake - my LBs made it once (the proprietor hurriedly corrected the person serving just as I was about to say "hang on a minute...")

Some cables have both types on - you snip off the one you don't want. If you buy tandem brake cables, (which are long) it's a handy way of getting a road inner and an MTB inner from one purchase.

Double ended every time for me. barrel one end, ball the other. snippity snip.
