While eldest is off at college I have taken the opportunity to give his bike a thorough overhaul. The bottom bracket, which we replaced about a year ago, was smooth but very stiff so I took it out to see if something could be done.
In my hand it all seemed fine but now I have reinstalled it the action is very rough and gritty and I am beginning to wish I had not taken it out.

Does anyone know of a way to get some lubricant into the bearings? I can't see any obvious way of dismataling it any further and there is no gap large enough for any grease. I could put a thinner lubricant on but that wouldn't last long in a bearing.
There is a spacer ring to make up the difference when fitting to a 68mm shell and I may try fitting this on the other side, this may affect the alignment a bit but this is the only option I have at the moment.
Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

The bearing is a 68-70/113mm ISIS cartridge fitted to a Kona Kula D/H which never gets down hilled but rarely gets serviced.

Pour some WD40 in to loosen it up and wash the ccr&p out, then relube with some 3 in 1 or similar.

Or - time for a new one.

"rough and gritty" usually means you have overtightened something - The drive side should be threaded fully first and then the non-drive side with washer is tightened up to a snug finish with the axle turning freely.

Give that a go and see if things are any better.

Incidentally - they pack BB's with grease to help the less mechanically minded which is why the BB was stiff and smooth.
