Ok so my bottom bracket started making a clicking noise. Usually at this point I take it the the LBS who charges me £15 and returns my bike sans click. But oh no, this time I thought let's have a look on Youtube. Found a vid, all looks straight forward enough. Check toolbox, lo and behold I have all the tools I need ( I do have a lot of tools that I haven't a clue what they are for!).

So step one, loosen left hand crank, done. Remove centre bolt, done. Remove left hand crank, done. Gently tap through the axle whilst spinning the chain off the chainring, almost done (whacked it with hammer, forgot all about the chain bit! Still no damage done!). Remove seal and clean behind it.

This is the problem, the seal came apart quite badly. So the questions are:

1. Do I need the seal as it's not actually much of a seal, just a piece of plastic?
2. Where can I get another one for a Hollowtec II BB?

I put it all back together again with some of the seal still in there, all works but still clicks!!! Any advice welcome or it's off to the LBS.

New HT II BBs are not that costly and are so easy to fit.

Come on it can't possibly need a whole new BB just cos I broke the plasticky thing!!!

I'm going to take it apart again, take all the plasticky thing that's left out and see how it runs without it. If I have to buy a new BB may as well trash the existing one!!

AND I WAS CLEANING IT!!!!

Speak to the lbs one of them is bound to have bits like this kicking around the workshop and will be happy to let you have them. Well my local ones do anyway!

The click has started because all the crap that was keeping it 'true' has been removed. As Ian says, false economy to not treat yourself to a new one, particularly as it is all undone.
(At the bike shop they probably just scooped up a handful of soil and gave it a good squidge, grinding it into the 'clicky' area...job's a good 'un!

You'll have to take better care of your Pashley when it's time, Martin - particularly with those big fat tyres...

If by chance you need a brand new Shimano UN54 68mm (English) 113mm square tapered bottom bracket; I've got one I'm trying to be rid of! (Sell or swap!)
Bought it by mistake; spindle is too long

Cheers for the offer but I've got a Hollowtech II, no spindles.

The seal I was referring to is a little bit of plastic just behind the crank arm on the BB. It was shown in a Hope video on youtube. Mine didn't appear to have one anyway cos the bit I broke didn't look the same.

As an update, new BB fitted, same noise. I'm currently looking at the pedals but these are only a month old. Will clean them and re-grease. Then again the BB was only 4 months old.

are you sure the clicking is coming from the BB bearings? Maybe it's the pedals? Or just a need for some fine tuning of the gears!

I've cleaned all the pedals up and regreased any bit I can regrease

The noise is too far forward to be the gears I think. I've checked the front mech isn't rubbing. Just going to have to work my way through everything..

Still, got a new bottom bracket so it's not all bad.
