My Wilier is only a couple of months old but just noticed my BB is making a horrible noise on one side. Is there anything I could do to fix this or should I just get it back to the shop?

Warranty - back to the shop. Is it an external bottom bracket? Some people on here have had a few problems with one type - BB30 I think it was.

Best to see what the problem is when you take it back. Many shop mechanics like it when a bike owner takes an interest in the bike's workings. Maybe they can explain what's going on. Then you'll know.

If I get a noisy bottom bracket which happens occasionally I will take the cranks and chainrings off. Clean the dirt that was trapped between the cranks and the bottom bracket. I will also rotate the bearings with my finger to check for roughness, if they feel rough a new BB is needed. But usually a good clean gets them running nicely. This is the type of BB I have:

My mountain bike has a completely different kind that I havent a clue about.

I've spoken to the shop and they are taking it in on Saturday morning. I did notice some strange brown grease at the top of the crank arm the other day. I thought at first the paint was chipping off.

Good. I hope they'll be able to sort it quickly for you.

This is probably related to the problem. It suggests a dud seal on the bearings.

Let us know what they say.

Very best of luck. Nice thing about outboard bearings is that you don't see the amount of pedal axle bend you used to see. When I had a similar problem on a Raleigh Grand Prix, the pedal axle was bent. Not so you could easily see it, but enough to rub against the front derailleur, if a little to one side or another. So I put a cotterless crank and axle on, and that works well. Somebody sure must have jumped off a curb or something with it, because the axle was truly good steel. .
