been reading a few bike forums recently (decided to join this one) as i have decided to rebuild my old raleigh record but first i need to check on parts, will modern bottom brackets fit this old bike

As its a Raleigh we should be talking English thread here so yes. You just need to know if the shell that the bracket fits into is 68 or 73 mm across. Achieving the same chain line might require some careful measuring to get the correct BB though.
