Not sure if its what its called but hopefully I can discribe what's wrong, I have removed the pedal crank and on inspection one of the bearings is totally buggered but this is not a problem as I have a complete set I want to fit BUT how do I get the other side off the bottom bracket, its the one which is slim with just two flats on it I have tried a normal open ended spanner but to no avail looking at books it looks like I need a special spanner, I don't realy want to spend mony on this project!! Any advice would be appreciated.

Is it the old style BB with a seperate axle, bearings and cups ?
If it is, there's usually a lockring with maybe 4 recesses in it for a C spanner, undo that (you can just drift it off with a punch and hammer if thats all thats available), then the cup itself should spin out freely. The two flats are purely for adjusting the cups, then the whole things locked with the outer lockring....if thats what you got.

No holes in this particular version the other side had an outer that used a c spabber then a central threaded unit that I used a normal spanner so all I'm left with is as i discribed I see what is left of the bearings but they are not loose and the nut is siezed solid, maybe a trip to my local cycle shop tomorrow??

Yup, could be siezed into the BB shell then. I'm sure your LBS will be able to deal with it. Shame tho when you have a go...and it doesnt work. 10/10 for trying eh.

Ohhhh yes, I know the type. You need a spanner like this but you might still not be able to get it out with the correct spanner. Once I had the same problem and my car mechanic managed to remove it for me.

Good luck

I'll edit my previous post to say that most likely it has a LH thread, but for a suggestion as to how to remove it, look here.

My mechanic used a vice to remove it -
The first home remedy demands that you have a high-quality bench vise. Simply grab the fixed-cup wrench flats in the vise jaws, making sure that you have good contact with all of the wrench flats' meager width. Grasp the bike frame and unscrew it from the cup. This technique works quite well.

I removed one from my Raleigh a couple of weeks ago to replace my BB with a sealed unit. I used a very large nut and bolt, the bolt head inside the cup and the nut outside. As I tightened the nut with a decent ratchet and socket the nut gripped the fixed cup against the bolt head, and unscrewed it. It did take a fair bit of pressure to get it to shift though.

That always works in my experience but use good quality sockets as you found, it can take a lot of pressure. The one on my Raleigh Twenty needed a friend to hold the bike on the ground and a four foot bar for extra leverage and it went with such a shot that I was convinced that I must have cracked the frame.
