Hi all, does any one know if i can replace a truvativ bb for something like Shimano, as on my bike there is play on the non drive side bearing where it sits on the splines of the crank spindle, not play in the bearing itself but wear in a spacer (ali) pressed into the bearing???;) Cranks are Bontrager, bike is a Bianchi boron steel frame.

I'm pretty sure that as long as your frame is sound you should have no problems - judging by a thread on creaking bbs a little way down, you might want to consider Campagnolo rather than Shimano - it is an Italian bike after all. And tho' I'm no Campag-bore (indeed, most of my bits are Shimano) I've ridden a Campagnolo Italian thread BB I bought a couple of years ago for a staggeringly low price - it was less than £2, brand new...don't ask me why, I really don't know - for thousands of miles without any problem at all. Still as smooth as anything.

Hi, i'm pretty sure its english thread as one is right and one is lefthand thread, however ive tightened it up and it seems to have removed the play but im not sure its right...

Your Bianchi will have BS thread not a Italian thread. You can change your old BB for any thing that is 69 x ??? If you dont know the lenght of it and you are planing of doing the job your self. Take out the old one and on the main barrel it will say the make, 69 x ??? its the ??? you need.

I used to have Campag. BB's and they wore out quite quick.

They were cup&cone not a sealed fit+forget.

Just to clarify, my bb is an out board type/ 2 separate bearing cups/ truvative gxp/ cranks are bontrager carbon, the problem seems to be that the left hand bearing has an ali spacer inside it which sits on the crank spindle, and it is play between this and the spindle which is giving the movement/noise, i just cant see how tightening the crank up will remove the play, would it not just tighten the 2 bearing towards each other??

If you have a external bb and it has that movement in the spindle! it not been done up right. To do it your self will be a pain unless you have the bits to do it so take it into your LBS.
