It's an alpenchallenge. The spec just says BSA threaded bottom bracket. I gather most BBs tighten anti-clockwise on the drivechain side, but this is a BBB to undo and i want to make sure i'm straining in the right direction - i.e. clockwise. Thanks for any assistance.

The right hand, drive side is reverse thread, so clockwise to loosen. The non drive side is standard thread, so anticlockwise to loosen.

Thanks for that. I managed after a struggle.

A good tip seems to be to screw an appropriate size (40mm M8 in this case) bolt through the middle of the extractor into the axle with a big washer to hold the tool firmly in place. Without this technique i found that the tool popped out when any appreciable torque was applied. I also first first located a big (22mm in this case) ring spanner on to the flats of the tool - the open end would have rounded them with the force (basically jumping on it) that was required.
