If it's an older square taper - a Shimano UN54 or similar, pull the dead BB and take it to the shop with you or measure it yourself, it's going to be 68mm and something or other - most likely 113mm.

£20 at most.

Thanks, looks like its a trip to the LBS anyway i got one side of the BB off but the other is in tight and i have not got the tools to grip it tight enough +get the leverage to get it out with the spanners i have to grip the BB tool properly.

Rear mech is screwed as well but i have a spare in stock .

Bloody typical. I just binned the original BB that came with my Virtuoso last week. I seem to remember that it didn't have a size printed on it though so I would advise taking it to your LBS to check for compatibility.

Not a problem, just remember the right hand cup is the fixed cup that needs to sit flush, the left hand one can stand proud by a few threads or so.

Got it in eventually the cup that is removable is plastic and kept cross threading , took maybe 5-6 attempts to get the beggar in , tightness of the cups does not affect how easy the bearings spin i assume?

Are you completely sure you havent got it the wrong way round?

Yes it is the right way round  i made sure i was screwing the right way , i have not got a bike stand so it was hard to keep it level while the bike was leaning against a well, trying to hold the BB tool level and turn the spanner evenly.
Just one of them "days " , once i got it going evenly it was a breeze....
