Looking for a new bottle cage - whats the downside to having a sideswap cage as ive always thought these looked quite handy?

Call me a cheapskate, but Wilkinsons sell plastic bottle cages for a very reasonable price. Its quite sturdy. Much more that the cage (extremley light, made of thick Alum wire!) on my Spesh. The light one on my spesh sends a reverb up the frame when the bottle is half full.
I had a box of old bits in the garage and amongst them was a handlebar mount bottle cage. A cup-holder for a bike. My ex-wife threw the box away, which was the last straw to the final argument before our divorce. I miss that bottle cage.

The downside with a sideswipe cage is that you have to always retrieve your bottle with the same hand, I'd say.

I favour the Elite Patao myself (Decathlon do them for £8) nicely designed and don't scratch the bottles.

Jimbo, wasn't the handlebar mounted cage pretty much standard at one time? I can remember pictures from around the '50s and '60s of pro bikes with the bottles mounted this way.

It was certainly very old school and I purchased one from by lbs this year for £ 3.99

Yup.

I've a photo somewhere (I shall try to find this weekend, if I still have the magazine), of a Domestique in the TdF with a double handlebar bottlecage.
He had a bottle in his downtube cage, seat tube cage, under top tube cage, all three back pockets, the handlebar cage and two bottles stuffed down the back of his jersey.

But he didn't have a rear-of-seat cage,,,, Slacker!
