They can be a real sod.

Try taking the wheels off, lock the removal tool on with a bolt / bit of metal, get the frame firmly set on some grass and really heave.

This worked for me - in the end.

Don't waste your time with penetrating oil, it doesn't work until you've started some movement.
Go to the shed and find a biggish bolt, a couple of nuts and some washers. Remove the bearings from inside the race. Work out which way you need to turn the race and set up the bolt with the washers and nuts either inside or outside the BB so that turning the head of the bolt the right way will tighten everything up. Then get a feck-off spanner (engineering term) and turn the bolt. The race will come out sweet as anything.

The problem is that the two metals form a bond and no amount of WD40 or heating will work.

I'd stick with the non-drive side which undoes normally.

There are two ways of getting them undone - but only use if the frame is not valuable.

1. get something longer to attach to the tool and then whack it as hard as you can( do not hold back). The sudden shock can free the BB.

or

2. Place the tool in a vice and then turn the frame - pure force can free the BB

please note these are not guaranteed to work

I'm making assumptions on what bottom bracket you have but if the cranks bolt on you can use the bolt and any bit of metal with a hole in it to hold the socket tool firmly in place. If it comes off the splines when you are really pushing you end up punching the ground very hard.

You need a bench vise. Clamp the spanner / bb tool in the vise, then hold the frame so that the tool engages properly in the lockring and then turn the frame. Best Christmas present I ever gave myself - BBs, cassettes, and anything else that's hard to shift. The additional leverage you can get really gets things moving - just as long as you are turning in the right direction.
