I got all ready for a ride this morning to find that the bolt which holds the cable for the front mech had sheared and the cable was not connected any more. I phoned Evans in Kendal, my LBS and I was told it can be tricky to get the cable just right so could I take the bike in? I reluctantly agreed but was just wondering if this is a sales pitch and that it may be quite easy anyway. I want to learn about my bike but I'm not going to if I take it into the shop all the time for every piddly little job.
All help welcome.

Thanks

Paul

Two aspects to think about Lavoisier, cable tension and is the old bolt completely out ?

FDs can be a bit tricky to set up, but you have the advantage that yours is already set H and L, all you have to think about is getting the right cable tension.

If you DIY at this stage, i'd set my downetube barrell adjuster to roughly half way, pull the cable tight, tighten the bolt that fits it to the mech and try it. If its not quite right, try 1/2 turns on your barrel adjuster to tighten the cable until you find something that works. Obviously, make sure you're in the right gear on your STI/Ergo.
Do not try to adjust anything else (H and Ls ). If it was working correctly before, it will work correctly again once youve got the tension right. If you start playing with the H/Ls, you'll make things much worse.

Is there any of the old snapped bolt still in the mech, or is it just a case of fitting a new one.

The old bolt is completely out. From what you describe it doesn't sound too taxing but I'm without transport after today to get it to the shop. I don't want to be without my steed over the weekend. They want it in about an hour so speedy replies most welcome. Am I perhaps just being too cynical?

PS Sorry guys I ran out of time. Chickened out and taken it to the shop. Get another ride in when I should have been fixing it....every cloud and all that.

I managed to get my FOC first service done at the same time so I don't feel so bad now. In future though I think I'll get stuck in myself. I can always take it to LBS if I cock it up.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll look up wheelbase and find out where it is relative to me, also bookmarked Sheldon Brown for times I'm in need of help.
