every FNRttC starts with a safety talk. It's excruciatingly embarrassing, but people endure it because they know that at the end of the safety talk they get to shout 'bollards' in unison.

Today I read that two people in my local CTC group had been injured by colliding with a bollard on a cycle path. This isn't the first time, either - a young woman split her kneecap a couple of years ago.

I don't know the particular circumstances, but I do think that the majority of these group ride injuries are avoidable. If you're going on a group ride the link above is worth a minute or two of your time.

The English are a bit reticent about calling out, but it's a decent habit to get in to.

Its not just bollards but glass too. I've found it helpful when other riders coming the opposite way when they've warned me of glass on the cycle tracks.

Communication makes things so much easier.

EDIT: its in your pic I notice!

How about car? That was the first thing I was taught to call out when I did my National Standards Instructors course. Only when you see one coming around a blind bend or such like (you'd have no breathe left otherwise lol)

I'd shout 'car up' or 'car down' on a daytime ride, but, to be honest, cars really don't figure on our rides. And if a car is behind us then it's probably going to have to wait.

It's the calling out thing that is so difficult to instil. We're getting better at it, but we're still not as good as we could be.

Just curious is all. I very rarely do it now unless the car is presenting a major hazard. I take it a lot of your course is off main roads then?

all kinds of roads - there's just no traffic around! And the headlights are a bit of a giveaway
