As long as I breathe, I attack.
I have seen the new bike in the flesh prior to launch as someone I know works as a buyer for the company so he gets pre release test rides.very nice bike

That though is fantastic value for money, Ultegra Di2 and all the rest for £3500 is awesome.
He kept on(and on) about being able to put mudguards on but that is useful but hardly a selling point for me.

I am seriously tempted on that. He didn't say gearing, any ideas? Given I ride a lot of hills I'd be needing compact and 11-34 if possible.

I d imagine 11-34 is the standard build. Even if it's not you buy a different cassette.

Quick Google reveals it does indeed come with gearing I'd want.

https://www.boardmanbikes.com/gb_en/products/2419-slr-9.6-carbon.html

However bike is stocked by Halfords and Tredz and both say sold out/not available?

Not showing out of stock here. Id imagine they are flying off the shelves at the moment. But Boardman will keep replinshing the stock. The previous 9.6 was in production for quite a few years.

I know boardman isn't a sexy brand. But other than that this looks a stonking bike- if it weren't for my crumbling spine this would be in my basket !

This guy is calling it race geometry - a point I wouldnt agree with

Looks great to me. A lot of bike for the money.

With the cycle business stagnating I look forward to more bikes being retailed at sharper price points.

i looked at the new 8.9 as i could get on on c2w but i doubt i would see any gains over my upgraded older team carbon which albeit rim brake its lighter and better wheelset and 11 speed rather than 10

If I get the chance I'm going to ideally test ride one or if not go and give it a good look over.
I ride a Canyon which were, possibly still are some of best bang for buck but that SLR is superb value.

Someone needs to have a word with canyon about their choice of colour schemes !!

I share your hope, but not your optimism.

I remeber when Boardmans first appeared, it quickly became obvious that if there was Boardman in your list of possible purchases then the Boardman was obviously going to be the one to buy.

Over recent years it has appeared to me that Halfords' Boardmans were slipping into a way of just selling Carreras at a high price, at one stage there was a £1K CF Carrera

This bike looks very much like a return to old days, although personally a pair of £1k Zipp wheels would be offputting, so saving that chunk of money and stepping down to the 105 one would be much better for me.

I have posted this picture on another thread but an LBS has had this up for a while

This represent the bike industry to me to a tee, it has become self deluded, £9k for a second hand bike! The trouble is that whilst £10k-£15K bikes were always going to be a small market, what seems to have happened is that £5k is only one third of the price of our most expensive bike so it is pretty cheap. Whereas "just" £3.5k for a bike for a non elite athlete is a staggeringly large amount of money to all but a few.

Halfords and Decathlon realise this and offer great value good, quality bikes under one brand (Carrera/Triban) and then still great value but higher priced and presumably more profitable under another brand (Boardman/Van Rysel).

The customer has a choice, but Specialized want £1k for a Claris drive trained Allez and the prices soar upwards from there.

Of course all of this is moot unless you are willing to pay now and wait until June when new stock is scheduled to come in, no good if you need the bike now, but not long to wait if you don't.

Bye

I don't understand.

The Boardman's have always been regarded as a solid choice - the only real complaints I've heard about about QC of assembly.

Mudguards are pretty much essential for an older arthritis ridden guy like myself. The geometry imo isn't as extreme as the reviewer suggests.

For £3.5k that boardman is ticking one hell of a lot of boxes - the 105 model for £2.5k even more so

Imo the Carrera and lower end bikes Halfords sells are aimed at a totally different market. Ie the guy who gets up one morning and decides to take up cycling a couple of hours and £700 later he's marching out of his local Halfords with his shiny new bike under his arm.

I'm struggling to see a downside to what looks a quality bike priced much lower than comparables.

I think the early Boardman's alloy and carbon were really top bikes.

The recent ones were a bit decathlon like. I doubt CB had much to do with them!

These new ones look much more stylish tbh.
