Boardman Hybrid Pro - hubs and wheels

The rear wheel hub on my beloved Boardman Hybrid Pro has rust in the freehub side "race" (is that the correct term). This has led to some minor pitting of the loose bearings in this side. As the bike is only 10 months old I've taken it back to Halfords to see if they'll fix it under warranty. I just told them that the bearings where making noises in the rear wheeI. I suspect they'll say wear and tear - but it's worth a go.

Was asking the "mechanic" in there various questions, possible causes with costs. When I mentioned the hub he hinted that it would be cheaper just to buy new wheels. Is this the case?

If so, then I might as well take the opportunity to upgrade my wheelset. Does anyone know of any sites that do 700x25 rims with decent QR hubs that are disc brake compatible?

Also I have the standard SRAM Rival 10 speed freehub on the back. Of the few wheelsets I have seen most have a Shimano 10 speed free hub on them. Are the 2 systems compatible?

Hi SquareDaff,

SRAM and Shimano are compatible. Campag is the one that doesn't go with anything else.

I've also wondered about doing a disc wheel upgrade, but on the CX Team. I think if I do I'll probably get something built... it all depends on what sort of riding it's for. Do you want strong wheels for reliability and carrying kit etc, or light aero ones for fast riding?

p.s. IMO the whole point of a warranty is that it's a specific amount of time that the manufacturers trust nothing major will go wrong with a bike. They'd probably argue against any drive train replacements, but as long as it's not from a crash or bump, wheels should definitely be covered as it sounds like something that's not a common wear and tear issue and therefore shouldn't be happening within 12 months of purchase.

I don't ride my hybrid on anything except roads so the lighter the better.

That would be my thinking too - granted I have done a lot of miles (about 3.5k) but haven't had any spills and the bike has never been anywhere other than on the road.
My suspicion is water ingress (and hence probably salt over the winter). In my mind that means a faulty seal -but I'm no expert on these things.
