Hello everyone im new and very scared  nice to meet you all and was hoping to tap in to your valuable fountain of knowledge. Rightly or wrongley i purchased a Boardman race bike from Halfords 2 weeks ago. Love the bike its my first road bike so to me its the fastest bike ive ever ridden in the world  until yesterday!!!

from the start the highest 3 gears have been noisey as if he chain was rubbing on something all the rest fine just the top 3 ? came off a hill yesterday went to change in to the top cog and crunce my gear assembley which attaches to the bar coming down from the seat just sort off fell off ?? rang my local halfords "bring it in frist thing sir we open at 9 sounds like the front mech needs adjusting "? took it in today cant look at that mate till a week friday

I know people are going to say you shouldn t have gone to halfords but ive never had a problem before but ive also never had the pleasure of there after sales care ! If anyone can point me in the direction of a better bike mechanic in the maidenhead area or if anyone knows how to fix my gears i would be uber grateful.

Many thanks
Mark

Firstly welcome to the forums!

I unfortunately don't know too much about fixing bikes or about the Maidenhead area, but your best option would be to visit a local bike shop (referred to on the forums as an LBS).
Not only will they appreciate you not going to a large company, but they shall be more then happy to look at it and talk you through it etc. Also, as you get into cycling, and you visit it more and more then they shall recognise your face and you can benefit more (get news of some new stock, get a couple of pounds knocked off the sale price etc.)

Sorry I couldn't of been of more help.

Don't ring them, take it in and insist that something if do sooner than a week on Friday. They tried that on with me once. They are bound to say that on the phone because its easy for them to flob someone off by phone. Go in and if they are still unhelpful tell them you want a full refund.

They can do better than that so dig your heels in.

Hi guys thanks for replying the phone call was the easy part the bloke explained gears brakes etc need adjusting after first use he said bring it in first thing we can have a quick look i was impressed with that but the child on the bike department desk was mega un helpful and either stoned or hungover blatantly not intrested and shoved an order book in front of me filled with appointments ! week friday is the best i can do sir. Gutted have the week off this week and was looking foward to some longer rides than the 15-20 mile trips ive been doing over the last couple of weeks.

Go back and reject the bike as unfit for purpose, and demand your money back

I bet that will get their attention

+ 1 Absolutely. Do it via the store manager and try and do it when they have customers in the store. Raise your voice if necessary.

They should do that straight away. From what you are saying the Front derailleur was not properly secured and therefore the store had not carried out a proper Pre Delivery Inspection. You could have had a nasty incident with the derailleur coming off.
Do not take no for an answer and ask for a quicker resolution. It will not take them long to do it and it will be good for improving their very low reputation.
Boardmans are good bikes it is a pity Halfords sells them.

Dont go to an independent unless halfords say they will pay to put it right.
Phone customer services and explain it all to them.
Tell them how unhelpful the store has been and how dissapointed you are with the whole experience and how are they going to resolve the situation for you quickly. Usually they will be sympathetic and get in touch with the store manager and make sure someone in store will deal with it properly.
Now you have the authority of the H.O. customer services behind you return to the shop and insist on them putting it right, pronto.
Believe me after 2 or 3 weeks general use things should not need servicing and if something goes wrong its due to poor workmanship when the bike was set up for you.
Personally, I would insist on a fresh start with a new bike and you want to know who is going to build and set the bike up and is he capable of doing so. You have to be pushy and if you think its not going to be resolve to the highest stand demand a refund and go elsewhere.
