I was just reading a old thread and see a similar sort of issue with my bike and was just wondering if it has not been setup properly.

I have noises coming from the chain when in the lowest gear ie bigger gear on crankset and smallest on cassette it's like the chain is running on something when I stand up and pedal also another thing is the the shimano sora for the crankset you can change up and apparently adjus it in halves according to the halfords dude or is this bull***t as when you want to change down you have to click it twice, I really am starting to think this bike was put together by someone who hasn't a scooby or even so didnt do anything but just unbox it and straighten the bars.

I'd even check they'd got the bars straight,

I think you will find that this is the highest gear, not the lowest.(unless you are confusing cranksets from cassettes).

As far as I know, Shamano STI allow for trimming (adjusting in half steps), certanly from Tiagra upwards.

If you chain is making a noise, it is probably rubbing against the front derailleur, and this is what needs adjusting by using your limit screws. Youtube is your friend.

As mentioned, pretty certain the limiter screw on the front mech needs adjusting slightly. I am 100 sure that sora does has trimming and shifts in halves to allow for chain rub on the front derailleur as you run up and down the rear block, (cassette)
I have sora sti's on my spesh allez winter bike.

I would check that it looks something like this:bicycle: and that its not made from something called wood:excl:.

The Big front cog to small rear cog noise sounds like a limit screw problem to me. Possibly preventing the chain from going into that gear fully. In anycase this is a reason I wouldnt buy from Halfords as I have had very bad experience with them in the past.
If it were me I would rather pay another store to set it up rather than take it back to Halfords for them to do it under warranty. I would only go back there if I needed a refund.

Also dependant on how new the bike is and used, all the cables will stretch when new at some point. This means gears will rub and brakes feel slack. It's a quick fix by using the cable adjusters to index and tighten (see youtube)
But if it is due it's free first service, book it in. They will do this for you as part of the service. If not for whatever reason, the CC community are here and happy to help and advise.

Thank you ppl I just got back from a ride and half way on the ride it started annoying me so I decided to watch a YouTube video and done it in a park I stopped at, pretty straight forward to be honest so much better not hearing it rub, now I've got to get around to doing the rear 1 as its a bit clonky and noisy changing gear.

I'm not gonna bother taking it back there for its 6 week service I'm a car mechanic so ill read a few guides and attempt the service my self as I probably do a better job that the ppl at halfords.

I have learnt pretty much how to do everything myself on a bicycle. The only thing I couldn't do was wheel truing, but recently I have had to learn.

Depending on how far away the shop is, it can't do any harm taking it in for the free service. Mind you, I never bothered with my new bike which I got last November.

I've just had a look at the rear cassette the chain was in the lower gears and it seems to be running on the gear above ie the side of the chain is this normal or should there be sme sort of clearance

Take it for its service for 1 reason, If in the future it does develop a major fault they could claim that the warranty is invalid because it could have been rectified at the 1st service ergo your fault go away (you can always fettle it yourself when you get it back)

I've never looked that closely TBH - but if it's not making clackety noises (i.e. attempting to shift) and it shifts quickly and smoothly up and down the rear gears when on both large and small front chain rings then there's not a lot wrong with it IMO. If that's not the case then you can
adjust the rear gears with the adjustment barrel, usually found where the cable threads into the rear deraileur. Don't rush, take your time and adjust slightly until the above criteria are met.

I have 2 halfords bikes and neither went back for their 6 week service (which they never called to arrange either despite saying they would both times) purely for the reason because I am competent with bike mechanics and did not want to leave it up to a stranger - I would only have to check it myself anyway (and probably make some adjustments as I had to do originally on both bikes as neither indexed quite right straight out of the shop)
