hi everybody,i'm looking to upgrade to a full carbon frame with a half decent groupset and the Boardman top spec model seems to tick all the boxes [ultegra is currently standard on the top spec model],i've heard the frames are a bit suspect to breaking under sustained heavy usage, this info was supplied by another bike shop supplier who reckons he used to work for Halfords,i'm not sure if he was telling porky's,for the money is seems hard to beat so would appreciate any feedback-thanks very much.

I have a (relatively new) Boardman CX Team enter the stable, which is not carbon frame so can't comment direct; however, at work we have two carbon road bikes, one a 2010 and 2011, and the owners love them and have had no problems (other than the usual halford's service).

I dont have one myself but they have a good reputation as being a good value for money bike, I would get one myself as a winter bike but they dont take mudguards. I havent heard any complaints

The CX bikes will take mudguards - one of the reasons I got one for my winter ride.

Can't say for absolute sure (I mean who knows) - but I reckon your bike shop supplier is telling porkies. Halfords themselves don't get a good reputation as bike shops - but Boardman bikes (which Halfords supply) get extremely good reviews in the bike mags. There really should be nothing to worry about there.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
My new road comp is a fantastic bike , i would recommend a boardman to anyone.

As for the frames it sounds more like the LBS trying to get you to buy their stuff , there have been enough stories knocking around about bikes from plenty of manufacturer's .A quick google and i see bell, trek, specialized, shimano etc have all had recalls.

I've got a Boardman pro carbon 2010 road bike and covered over 1k miles on it since purchase last Christmas. Absolutely love the bike. Only problem I had with it was incorrect build by Halfords which was solved by taking it to LBS for it to be built properly.

Certainly don't have any problems with the performance, completed 3 x 100+ mile rides longest took over 6.5 hours and shortest down to 5.5 hours. No aches or pains caused by the bike just sore muscles from the mileage. The bike climbs brilliantly, is sure footed on quick down hill sections and certainly don't have any problems staying with if not beating most other riders I go out with. All in all a great bike and lots of bike for the money.

I've had the 2010 Team Carbon for just over a year - no problems, and the 2011 CX team for 2 months - no problems. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another as the value for money is excellent.

No real Halfords issues either. Oh apart from a loose headset on the Carbon, but obviously easily sorted. The mechanics at my local branch actually seem to take a bit of pride in building the Boardmans and only let a couple of specialists loose on them.

Either way, if you're looking at the top end Elite range, you can't get them from Halfords anyway, so I can't see any reason why you shouldn't go for it.

I have two Boardmans; A Carbon Comp road & a Hybrid comp- both awesome bikes for the dosh.... just got my LBS to give them a service as I teach some of the kids who work in my local Halfords- and I wouldn't trust 'em with sharpening a pencil (bless 'em) ;-)
